About this tour
Most visitors see Ayutthaya from a tour bus. This afternoon starts somewhere they never get to go: Sricharoen Shipyard, a working wooden boat yard on the Chao Phraya, run by our family since 1973 and not open to the public. You’ll walk among boats hauled out of the river, see repairs in progress, and learn how traditional wooden boats are still built and kept afloat today.
From there, step next door into Baan Hollanda, where Dutch merchants traded in the 1600s, then board our boat to see the old city the way traders once did: from the water. You’ll pass the old Japanese and Portuguese quarters and riverside temples, then end with the engine off, drifting quietly beneath Wat Chaiwatthanaram, part of Ayutthaya’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, as the sun goes down.

“Had a fantastic day at Karnrua Sricharoen, A shipyard at Ayutthaya. Owner/operator Khun Po and his family are repairing old Thai wooden boats. It’s a fantastically ambitious project and one that will be rewarding for decades. Khun Po and his mother conducted a wonderful river tour. Typically this would be on a long tail boat powered by solar... Unique in Thailand But today the boat was in mainlenance, so we went on a more traditional motor craft. We passed Riverfront homes, temples, archaeological sites, and even the royal residence. The day included a delicious lunch and warm hospitality. One of my best experiences in Thailand!”

“Super cool to see this shipyard. They were still cleaning up from the floods but it looked really cool and a lot of the projects look like they’re out of a fantasy. The electric longtail boat project is truly inspirational to see.”

“I admire Mr. Chatchawal and his family, owners of Sri Charoen Boatyard, for continuing their business of producing and restoring antique wooden boats, which are almost impossible to find nowadays. They are helping to preserve and conserve this Ayutthaya art form for Thailand for many years to come. 👍”

“Sri Charoen Shipyard is located next to the Holland House. Here, traditional methods of shipbuilding and repair are still used, and it serves as a learning space for young people interested in local wisdom.”

“Sri Charoen Shipyard, a wooden boatyard that uses traditional methods for building, repairing, and restoring boats, is a worthwhile place to visit and learn about. River and canal travel has been the primary mode of transportation for Thais since ancient times, and boats are therefore an important means of transport that should be supported and preserved for future generations.”
